What will you do, God, when I die?
When I, your pitcher, broken, lie?
When I, your drink, go stale or dry?
I am your garb, the trade you ply,
you lose your meaning, losing me.

Homeless without me, you will be
robbed of your welcome, warm and sweet.
I am your sandals: your tired feet
will wander bare for want of me.

Your mighty cloak will fall away.
Your glance that on my cheek was laid
and pillowed warm, will seek, dismayed,
the comforts that I offered once –
to lie, as sunset colors fade
in the cold lap of alien stones.

What will you do, God? I am afraid.

– Rainer Maria Rilke

Bertrand Russel નું ઘણું જાણીતું વિધાન યાદ આવી જાય છે – ‘ God is a sweet,self-deceptive and romantic imagination of mankind. ‘

ABCDEFG HIJKLMN OPQRSTU VWXYZ You, who may be well- versed in praising a good poem and its translation, may find out suitable letters from the abovementioned alphabet and write down a good commentary over such a beautiful poem. In fact, Who am I

I entirely agree with Panchambhai. When you transalate a poem written in a foreign tongue, it should never be a literal wordy translation devoid of its own heart. A word in isolation by itself can easily be translated but then it will be very dry (like a dictionary) but when words unite and come together to create a though, a feeling, an inner experience in a foreign toungue in an alien culture then what a great poet (like Makarandbhai) has done is to reinterprete it beautifully in his own tongue and culture. These attempts-instead of calling them “translation of”, should be called “inspired by”
