વિશ્વમાનવી -ઉમાશંકર જોશી
ગુજરાતી સાહિત્ય પરિષદનું સન 1983-84નું સત્ર સૂરતમાં ભરાયેલું. એ વખતે ઉમાશંકર જોશીને પહેલી વાર જોવા-સાંભળવાનો અવસર મળેલો. બપોરના સમયે એ જમવા માટે બહાર નીકળતા હતા ત્યારે એમને autograph કરી આપવા વિનંતી કરી. એ વખતે ઉમાશંકર ઉતાવળમાં હતા એટલે એમણે autograph book સાથે લઈ લીધી. બપોર પછી એમને મળવા ગયો તો એમણે autograph book તૈયાર રાખેલી. એમની સહી સાથે એમણે આ પંક્તિ ટાંકેલી –
(ઉમાશંકરે ભૂલથી 1-1-83 તારીખ લખી છે. સાલ ’83 લખી છે તે ખરેખર ’84 હોવી જોઈએ.)
આજે ઉમાશંકરની એ જ અમર રચના માણીએ.
વિશ્વમાનવી
કીકી કરું બે નભતારલીની
ને મીટમાં માપું દિગંતરાલને,
માયા વીંધીને જળવાદળીની
અખંડ દેખું પળમાં ત્રિકાલને.
સન્ધ્યા-ઉષાની સજી પાંખજોડલી
યાત્રી બનું ઊર્ધ્વમુખી અનંતનો;
સ્વર્ગંગમાં ઝુકવું ચંદ્રહોડલી,
સંગી બનું વા ધૂમકેતુ-પંથનો.
વ્યક્તિત્વમાં બંધન તોડીફોડી,
વિશ્વાન્તરે પ્રાણપરાગ પાથરું;
પાંખો પ્રકાશે તિમિરે ઝબોળી
સ્થળે સ્થળે અંતરપ્રેમ છાવરું.
વ્યક્તિ મટી બનું વિશ્વમાનવી;
માથે ધરું ધૂળ વસુન્ધરાની.

I read your comment and I will definately email you. Meanwhile thanks for posting this wonderful poet with ‘memoir’ you have with you.
Panchambhai’s comments are always worth reading and more educative. Actually I also forgot lots of “vyakaran”.
I just wanted to know which alankar is used in “Sagar ane Shashi” in a line called “kamini kokila keli kunjan kare, sagare bhasti bhavya bharati”. I think it is “varnanuprash alankar”. Correct me if I am wrong.

According to me its (kamini kokila keli kujan kare) also ‘varnanupras’ or ‘varna-sagai alankar’. Do you know the background of this poem of kavi ‘Kant’….? It is described in one of the issues of Kesuda by shri Kishor Raval.
In short: This poem was writen by Kant because he was asked to do by the maharaja of Bhavnagar while on a full-moon day nigh picnic….! I got my answer since many years ….why i find this poem very synthetic and not natural…it was just to please maharja with the highest poetic knowledge!
Basically, all alankar and chhand are the heart of any good poem however, its over emphasis and only focus toward it makes the whole set of so called poem with bunch of nice words without the soul of realization.
Any good reader can make out the difference between crafty poem and natural poem.
In three great contemporary poets: Umashankar, sundaram and Krushnalal ShreeDharani, Umashankar is well known due to its political skills, higher academic position etc. he is very logical and profound in use of words but soemtimes you find a great dela of craftsmanship in his poems while sundarm is very natural with his most elegant lyrical style. very few actually know about the true potentail of ShreeDharani…He was a very creative poet….went to USA!
I would recomned if any one can find his good poems an publish.
