અગ્નિ અને હિમ – રોબર્ટ ફ્રોસ્ટ (અનુ. નિરંજન ભગત)
કોઈ કહે જગતનો લય અગ્નિથી, વળી
કોઈ કહે હિમ થકી, પણ કામનાનો
જે કૈં મને સ્વાદ મળ્યો છે એથી
લાગે જ સાચા સહુ અગ્નિ પક્ષના.
બે વાર જો જગતનો લય હોય થાવો
મેં દ્વેષ કૈં અનુભવ્યો બસ એટલો કે
કહી શકું હું હિમ પણ સમર્થ
વિનાશને કાજ, હશે જ પૂરતું.

કવિતા શરૂ થાય છે આનંદમાં અને પરિણમે છે ડહાપણમાં – રોબર્ટ ફ્રોસ્ટની આ ફિલસૂફી એની કવિતાઓમાં સતત નજરે ચડે છે. સરળમાં સરળ વસ્તુ પર સરળમાં સરળ ભાષામાં કવિતા કરવી અને વાતના બે છેડા સામસામે ગોઠવી વાચકને ક્રોસરોડ પર છોડી દેવો એ એની આગવી શૈલી છે જે આ કવિતા કે ‘રોડ નોટ ટેકન’ જેવી ઘણી કવિતાઓમાં નજરે ચડે છે.
2012માં વિશ્વ નાશ પામશેની વાતો કરતાં કરતાં આપણે વર્ષના અંતભાગ સુધી આવી ગયા પણ વિશ્વનો નાશ અને પ્રલય એ કદાચ વિશ્વના ઉત્પત્તિકાળથી ચાલી આવતી ચર્ચા છે. વિશ્વ ક્યાં તો આગથી અથવા બરફથી નાશ પામશે એવી વાતો ફ્રોસ્ટના સમયે ચરમસીમા પર હતી. એ વાતનો મર્મ લઈને નવ જ પંક્તિમાં ફ્રોસ્ટ કેવી મજાની કારીગરી કરે છે !

According to one of Frost’s biographers, “Fire and Ice” was inspired by a passage in Canto 32 of Dante’s Inferno, in which the worst offenders of hell, the traitors, are submerged, while in a fiery hell, up to their necks in ice: “a lake so bound with ice, / It did not look like water, but like a glass … right clear / I saw, where sinners are preserved in ice.”
In an anecdote he recounted in 1960 in a “Science and the Arts” presentation, prominent astronomer Harlow Shapley claims to have inspired “Fire and Ice”.Shapley describes an encounter he had with Robert Frost a year before the poem was published in which Frost, noting that Shapley was the astronomer of his day, asks him how the world will end. Shapley responded that either the sun will explode and incinerate the Earth, or the Earth will somehow escape this fate only to end up slowly freezing in deep space. Shapley was surprised at seeing “Fire and Ice” in print a year later, and referred to it as an example of how science can influence the creation of art, or clarify its meaning.
In a 1999 article, John N. Serio claims that the poem is a compression of Dante’s Inferno. He draws a parallel between the nine lines of the poem with the nine rings of Hell, and notes that like the downward funnel of the rings of Hell, the poem narrows considerably in the last two lines. Additionally, the rhyme scheme, ABA-ABC-BCB, he remarks, is similar to the one Dante invented for Inferno.
