ગાંધીને પગલે પગલે – ઉમાશંકર જોશી
ગાંધીને પગલે પગલે તું ચાલીશ ને ગુજરાત ?
કૃષ્ણચરણથી અંકિત ધરતી તણી બની આ કાયા;
પવિત્ર જરથુષ્ટ્રી આતશ બહેરામ અહીં લહેરાયા.
અશોકધર્મલિપિથી ઉર પાવન;
જિનવર-શિષ્યોની મનભાવન.
સત્ય-અહિંસાની આંખે તું ભાળીશ ને ગુજરાત ?
ગાંધીને પગલે પગલે તું ચાલીશ ને ગુજરાત ?
નરસિંહ-મીરાંની ગળથૂથી, ઘડી શૂર સરદારે,
મૃદુલ હૃદય તું, તોયે નિર્ભય સિંહડણક ઉદગારે.
મસ્જિદ મંદિર વાવ તોરણે
લચે રમ્યતા તવ વને-રણે.
બિરુદ ‘વિવેકબૃહસ્પતિ’નું જે, પાળીશ ને ગુજરાત ?
ગાંધીને પગલે પગલે તું ચાલીશ ને ગુજરાત ?

આજે ત્રીસમી જાન્યુઆરી, ગાંધીનિર્વાણદિને લયસ્તરો તરફથી આ યુગમાનવને શત શત કોટિ વંદન…
પોતાના ગુજરાત રાજ્યને ગાંધીના પગલે પગલે ચાલવાનું આહ્વાન આપતા કવિ આ ધરતી કૃષ્ણ, જરથુષ્ટ્ર, ભગવાન બુદ્ધ અને મહાવીર સ્વામીના સંસ્કારોથી સિંચિત હોવાનું અને નરસિંહ-મીરાં જેવા ભક્તકવિઓ અને સરદાર જેવા શૂરાઓની સિંહડણક અને ગાંધીના સત્ય-અહિંસાની આંખે દેખતી હોવાનું યાદ કરાવે છે.
ગુજરાતના જન્મસમય સમીપે લખાયેલા આ ગીતમાં કવિ ગુજરાતને મળેલા ‘વિવેકબૃહસ્પતિ’ બિરુદની વાત કરે છે. આ વિશેનો સંદર્ભ શોધવામાં હું નિષ્ફળ રહ્યો છું. કોઈ સુજ્ઞ વાચકમિત્ર એના વિશે જાણકારી આપશે તો અહીં સાભાર નોંધ લઈશું…

સ્વતંત્ર ભારતનાં ઈતિહાસમાં ગુજરાતનું યોગદાન ઘણું મોટું છે. ગુજરાતને વિવેકબૃહસ્પતિનું બિરુદ આપવામાં કદાચ સરદાર વલ્લભભાઈ પટેલનું વલણ નિમિત્ત બનેલું – તેમની વિવેકબુદ્ધિને કારણે ભારતનો નકશો બદલાયો અને ગાંધીજીની સ્વાતંત્ર્ય લડત તો ખરી જ …. મેં ક્યાંક વાંચેલું યાદ છે …… પણ તે છતાં ગુણવંતભાઈ શાહ વધુ પ્રકાશ પાડી શકશે.

ગાંધીને પગલે પગલે તું ચાલીશ ને ગુજરાત ? સુંદર! સત્ય અને અહિંસાન્ં ભાવના આજ પણ કઈ સંતોમાં જોવા મળે છે.

આંધીઓ છો ઉમટે અંધતા આભે અડે! સત્યની પદ પંક્તિને ના કોઇ વંટોળો નડે!

Today I went by the Gandhi Ashram around 5 pm in Ahmedabad. Some politician had come from New Delhi so with a caravan of 15 cars of police and security there was a traffic jam outside Gandhi Ashram. If I had to provide an evidence for lack of vision or foresight of our leaders at local, state and national level over the past sixty years, it is the quality of surroundings of the Gandhi Ashram! I visited Gandhi Ashram for the first time in 1954 and subsequently many times; but every time I visited, I saw that there is deterioration around the Gandhi Ashram. Once isolated Ashram now stands among lots of local huts, cottages and buildings and traffic and pollution. Why no one thought of keeping one or two square miles or more area around the Gandhi Ashram in its original condition as a national monuments so future generations can see in what environment Gandhi lived once upon a time? It is still not too late, if there is political leader with a will and vision, it can be done. Gerge Washington’s mansion is still preserved in Virginia in its original form. In India, we just do not care about preserving something for the future generations. Remembering Gandhi on Oct 2 and Jan 30 seems to satisfy our obligation to this man called M K Gandhi who was a beacon of light to the whole mankind. I am sorry to say that very few people seem to know what Gandhi stood for in present day India. I cry not only the death of Gandhi but how his teachings have been ignored by the people who claim to be his followers.

I totally agree with everything Dr. Dinesh Shah has said. Why do Indians only remember Mahatma Gandhi only on 2nd Oct. and 30 Jan. and not follow what this great leader preached (Satya and Ahinsa). Hum Kab Sudhrenge?
