Look not above, there is no answer there;
Pray not, for no one listens to your prayer;
NEAR is as near to God as any FAR,
And HERE is just the same deceit as THERE.

Allah, perchance, the secret word might spell;
If Allah be, He keeps His secret well;
What He hath hidden, who shall hope to find ?
Shall God His secret to a maggot tell?

So since with all my passion and my skill,
The world’s mysterious meaning mocks me still,
Shall I not piously believe that I
Am kept in darkness by the heavenly will ?

And do you think that unto such as you,
A maggot minded,starved, fanatic crew,

હેતુપૂર્વક ગુજરાતી અનુવાદ નથી કરતો, કારણ કે એક અનુવાદ પર્શિયનમાંથી થઇ ચૂક્યો છે. જેટલા અનુવાદ થાય તેટલું સત્વ ઘટતું જતું હોય છે. જયારે જયારે ખય્યામની આ રચનાઓ વાંચી છે ત્યારે ત્યારે મારુ તેઓ માટેનું માન વધતું જાય છે…..સૂફી પરંપરા આમ પણ બળવાખોરી માટે જાણીતી છે, અને અહીં તો કવિ અંતિમ બળવો કરી રહ્ય છે. તમામ ઓથોરિટીને ખુલ્લેઆમ લલકારે છે…. અંગ્રેજી સરળ છે- ભાવાર્થ પ્રત્યેક ભાવક પોતાની રીતે સમજે એ જ ઉચિત છે, પણ સૂર એકદમ સ્પષ્ટ છે. ખય્યામ શબ્દો ચોર્યા વિના બધું જ કહી દે છે…..

    બધી માન્યતાઓને, અભિપ્રાયોને, વિવાદોને બાજુએ મુકી, જીવન વિશે ‘સહજ ભાવ’ની અતિ સુંદર અભિવ્યક્તિ . બહુ જ ગમ્યો.
    પોતાને Maggot કહી શકનારની નમ્રતાને સાદર વંદન.
